Which Certification Is Right For Me?

The CBSPD offers 6 levels of certification: Technician, Surgical Instrument Processor, Ambulatory Surgery Technician, Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor, Supervisor, and Manager.

All the information for the exam you need including the application is in our Candidate Bulletins which are on our downloads page. The purpose of the page you are on now is to allow you to briefly view the certification levels so that you can better determine which candidate bulletin you need.

Below we will give the requirements for each exam as well as the subject matter of the exams which will be covered in our study guides. We have a study guide for each exam level that costs $20 each. Obtain a study guide through our secure on-line order form or by contacting our office with a credit card number. Also, there are order forms in each Candidate Bulletin that you can send in to us as well.

SPD TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION: 5 Years
THIS EXAM IS NOT THE SAME AS OUR SPECIALIZED SURGICAL INSTRUMENT EXAM. THIS EXAMINATION IS FOR TECHNICIANS WORKING IN CS/SPD AND COVERS ALL AREAS OF WORKING IN THE DEPT INCLUDED IN THE OUTLINE BELOW.

Eligibility Requirements: The CBSPD does not discriminate among applicants as to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status. The examination is only offered in English. Candidates must be able to interpret, speak, and write English.

Prior to the examination deadline, only **ONE** of the following requirements MUST be met in order to qualify to take this examination.
  • Completion of 12 months of full-time employment or equivalent part-time hours performing SPD activities. ...OR
  • Successful completion of a related allied health program and 6 months employment practicing SPD. ...OR
  • Completion of 1 year of healthcare product sales or service related to the SPD profession. ...OR
  • Completion of a Central Service/SPD Training Course with a passing grade of 70 or higher (provide copy of certificate or grade).
Cost for Exam: $115 (U.S. Dollars)
Certification Length: 5 years
Points Needed to Re-certify: 100
**CBSPD awards 50 points for full time employment over the 5 years (with verification). A candidate would then only need to earn 10 points per year to re-certify.
Cost of Re-certifcation for another 5 years: $100

SURGICAL INSTRUMENT PROCESSOR CERTIFICATION: 5 Years

THIS EXAM DOES NOT COVER THE ENTIRE DEPT LIKE THE SPD TECHNICIAN EXAM DOES. THIS EXAM DEALS ONLY WITH SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS. THIS EXAM IS FOR THOSE THAT SPECIALIZE IN PROCESSING OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR ALL AREAS OF THEIR FACILITY. IT DEALS SPECIFICALLY WITH TYPES OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM USING PICTURES AND HOW TO USE THEM. SEE OUTLINE BELOW.

Eligibility Requirements: The CBSPD does not discriminate among applicants as to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status. The examination is only offered in English. Candidates must be able to interpret, speak, and write English.

  • Completion of 24 months (2 years) of full-time employment or equivalent part-time hours performing surgical instrument processing activities. ...OR
  • Completion of a surgical instrument processing course with a passing grade of 70 or higher (provide a copy of certificate or grade) AND 12 months (1 year) experience performing surgical instrument processing. ...OR

  • Completion of 24 months (2 years) surgical instrument sales or service. ...OR
  • Completion of a surgical technology course AND 12 months (1 year) experience performing surgical instrument processing.

AMBULATORY SURGERY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION: 5 Years

  • Successful completion of a related allied health program and 6 months employment practicing Ambulatory Surgery sterile processing . ...OR

  • Completion of a Central Service/SPD/Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Training Course with a passing grade of 70 or higher (provide copy of certificate or grade).

FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPE REPROCESSOR CERTIFICATION: 5 Years

Eligibility Requirements: The CBSPD does not discriminate among applicants as to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status. The examination is only offered in English. Candidates must be able to interpret, speak, and write English.

Prior to the examination deadline, only **ONE** of the following requirements MUST be met in order to qualify to take this examination.

  • 12 months (1 year) experience processing flexible endoscopes ...OR
  • Successful completion of an Endoscopy Technician course with a minimum of 60 hours and a grade of 70 or higher plus three (3) months experience in processing flexible endoscopes...OR
  • Six (6) months experience in processing flexible endoscopes and a certificate of completion of an Endoscopy Training program of at least eight (8) hours in length.
Cost for Exam: $115 (U.S. Dollars)
Certification Length: 5 years
Points Needed to Re-certify: 100

SPD SUPERVISOR CERTIFICATION: 5 Years
Eligibility Requirements: The CBSPD does not discriminate among applicants as to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status. The examination is only offered in English. Candidates must be able to interpret, speak, and write English.

Prior to the examination deadline, only **ONE** of the following requirements MUST be met in order to qualify to take this examination.
  • Minimum of 18 months experience as a Technician AND certified as a Technician. ...OR
  • Minimum of 18 months experience as an SPD Technician AND currently hold the position/title of Supervisor for at least 6 months. (Technician certification IS required). ...OR

  • Minimum of 6 months employment in allied health AND 30 months experience as a Technician. (Technician certification NOT required).
Cost for Exam: $150 (U.S. Dollars)
Certification Length: 5 years
Points Needed to Re-certify: 150
**CBSPD awards 25 points for full time employment over the 5 years (with verification). A candidate would then need to earn 25 points per year to re-certify.

SPD MANAGER CERTIFICATION: 5 Years
Eligibility Requirements: The CBSPD does not discriminate among applicants as to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status. The examination is only offered in English. Candidates must be able to interpret, speak, and write English.

Prior to the examination deadline, only **ONE** of the following requirements MUST be met in order to qualify to take this examination.
  • Minimum of 30 months experience as an SPD Technician AND certified as a Supervisor. ...OR
  • Minimum of 36 months experience as an SPD Technician and/or Supervisor AND currently hold the position/title of Manager for at least 6 months. (Technician certification IS required). ...OR
  • Minimum of 36 months experience as a Supervisor. (Technician and/or Supervisor certification NOT required).
Cost for Exam: $150 (U.S. Dollars)
Certification Length: 5 years
Points Needed to Re-certify: 150
